The best way to tell your story is a lot like giving a great speech. We need to answer three key questions, not only to inform, but also to captivate our audience.


1. What?


First, we must highlight who, or what we are talking about. Who is the main character of our story? It is right here and now that most get tripped up because we think the story is about us. But when we talk only about ourselves, we lose the attention of our following.

Our story is not just about us, it’s about those around us. People want to hear about something that affects them, that in some way is about them. As individuals, this means we mean to build our personal brands around how we are utilizing our passions to help make a positive impact on others.


As companies, it is essential that we make the customer our protagonist in everything we do. We need to find out what our customers are passionate about so that we can create content that provides them value.


What we talk about must then be a microcosm of who our audience is, and what they care about. And often the easiest topic for us will be at the intersection of what we love talking about most and how we can best help those around us.


2. So what?


As we tell our story, we need to imagine that people are tacitly asking themselves over and over again, so what? It’s imperative that we show why the reader or viewer should care about our story. We need to show why it is important to them. What do they gain from consuming what we are offering them?


Essentially, people want to know why we love doing what we do everyday. We need to show them why we create what we do and how this can help make their lives better. The best way to create great content is to show people what we’ve made with our own two hands.


We make our customers feel like superheroes when they get something more than just a product from us, they get peace-of-mind. People want to be a part of something larger than themselves. We need to allow them to buy into our purpose by showing them why what they care about is important to us.


3. What now?


And lastly, we must concentrate on bringing our story full circle by giving our audience a call-to-action. What can they do with this new knowledge to help make the world a better place? This matters to them because it’s their world. What happens to it affects them.


We’re all inherently selfish, we need to be to survive. That’s all everyone is trying to do, just survive. This being the case, we need to offer up guidance as to how our spectators can make their lives better with what we have to offer.


We should attempt to inspire others whereby they must take action in accordance with what they now know. The clearer the path we set before them, the more transparent we become.

The reason we need to tell our story is that we never know who we’re going to impact. We all want to do business with who we know. Because of this, we need to show those around us who we are.


So what’s the best way to tell a story? Just show them what you’ve created.
